White House Marks Iran Escalation Invite ‘Tentative’ After Checking Midterms
The calendar slot labeled "Iran: Next Steps — After Midterms" is still on the books, now looking for a quieter week.

WASHINGTON — The White House Office of Scheduling confirmed Thursday that the recurring calendar invite titled “Iran: Next Steps — After Midterms” remains on the books, now marked “tentative” after Democrats won both chambers of Congress.
For weeks, President Donald Trump had said any return to full-scale bombardment of Iran would wait until U.S. elections were over. Aides told Qatari mediators before Election Day they wanted to “see first how the elections turn out for us,” according to people familiar with the talks. After the midterm wipeout, Trump told reporters the war had “largely” hurt Republicans at the polls because it “drove the gasoline up a little bit short term,” and that if he had it to do again, he’d “have to do it again.”
Scheduling director Maribel Kett-Thorn, 41, said the invite had 47 attendees, three attachments labeled “options,” and a location field that simply read “TBD / region.” “We do not cancel national-security holds,” she said. “We move them to a week when fewer people are checking their phones for recounts.”
The subject line has already been revised twice, from “After Midterms” to “After Midterms (Revised)” to “After Midterms (Holding Pattern).” An automated reminder still fires every morning at 8:15 asking whether the escalation is happening “today or after coffee.” Kett-Thorn said nobody has clicked “Accept” since Tuesday night.
Vice President JD Vance publicly blamed the war for the party’s losses. Kett-Thorn forwarded his statement to the invite thread with the note “FYI — may affect quorum.”
Current indications suggest the invite will stay on the grid through next week, grayed out like a dentist appointment the patient keeps rescheduling while insisting the cleaning was the right call.
