ORLANDO, FL — Walmart employees were left baffled this week after a local man reportedly challenged a store display Roomba to “trial by combat” during a dispute over a failed vacuum purchase.
The incident occurred at approximately 2:15 p.m. Tuesday afternoon inside the electronics section of a Walmart Supercenter. Witnesses say the man — who has not been publicly identified — marched toward the robotic vacuum display, loudly accusing the Roomba of “betrayal” and “cowardice,” before slapping the unit with what appeared to be a half-eaten Twix bar.
“I thought it was a TikTok thing,” said employee Carla Reyes. “But then he kept yelling about how it hadn’t cleaned a single crumb and demanded it face him in battle.” Reyes said the man made several attempts to turn the demo unit on before pushing it into a shopping cart and declaring, “We’ll settle this outside, robot.”
Security was called when the man tried to roll the Roomba into the parking lot, reportedly muttering, “Neutral ground, no interference.” When stopped by store personnel, he insisted on a refund, claiming the Roomba “had already conceded defeat by silence.”
Walmart later released a statement confirming that the Roomba in question had been a non-operational demo since 2021. “We value customer satisfaction,” the statement read, “but draw the line at customers attempting to duel our display units.”
The man was not arrested, but he was escorted off the property and advised not to return. One security guard on duty described the situation as “the most civil robot uprising I’ve ever seen.”
Meanwhile, social media has responded with a mix of concern and amusement. A local satire page has already begun selling shirts that read: “I Survived the Roomba War of Aisle 9.”
