White House Puts $5,000 Checks Behind a Midterm Paywall
The $5,000 "Trump Dividend" is already in your Treasury app, right next to a button that won't work until after November 3.

Paducah, KY — Millions of Americans opened the Treasury Department’s mobile app this week to find President Donald Trump’s promised $5,000 “Trump Dividend” already sitting in their accounts, marked “Pending, awaiting results” and locked behind a screen asking them to check back after November 3.
The payment, which Trump has promised to every adult citizen if Republicans keep the House and Senate, appears in bold green numbers above a gray button labeled “Unlock With Majority.” Tapping it opens a countdown clock and a short survey asking how users are “feeling about the House.”
“I’ve refreshed it 400 times,” said retired school-bus mechanic Darlene Hubcapp, 67, who has already spent the money twice in her head. “It went from ‘Pending’ to ‘Pending (Optimistic)’ for about four seconds Tuesday. I told my grandson to hold the boat.”
House Speaker Mike Johnson has said Congress would still need to approve the payments, a detail Treasury officials say they are handling in the proper order. Under the current plan, voters cash the bribe first, and Congress votes on whether it was a bribe afterward.
“This is a standard two-step process,” said Treasury digital services coordinator Brent Ledger-Fold. “Step one, the money is real. Step two, someone decides whether the money is real. We felt it was important to lead with the good news.”
Users who scroll to the bottom of the app find terms of service stating the funds may be “reclassified, rescheduled, or reimagined” depending on turnout, and that disputes can be filed under ticket category “Election Results May Vary.”
As of this report, Hubcapp had enabled push notifications, and the app had sent her one message: “Your $5,000 misses you. Polls open at 6 a.m.”
