NFL Week 1: Fans Prepare for Another Season of Yelling at TV Screens

US — As the NFL kicks off its 2024 season, fans across the country are dusting off their jerseys, stocking up on nachos, and gearing up for another year of passionately yelling at their TV screens. Whether it’s a questionable play call, a missed tackle, or that inevitable moment when your fantasy quarterback throws an interception, football enthusiasts are ready to lose their voices from the comfort of their own living rooms.

“I’ve been practicing my yelling all offseason,” said Tom, a lifelong Cowboys fan from Texas. “I’ve got a new recliner, reinforced vocal cords, and a fridge stocked with beer. I’m ready to scream ‘WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!’ at the TV for the next 17 weeks.”

Bars and living rooms alike are being transformed into arenas of raw emotion, where every fumble is a personal attack and every touchdown feels like a life-or-death situation. The excitement is palpable, as is the dread, because deep down, every fan knows their team will inevitably disappoint them at some point—or every point.

Sports psychologists have already begun issuing their annual warnings to fans: “Remember, they can’t hear you through the screen,” said Dr. Lisa Fields, who specializes in post-game therapy. “No matter how loudly you scream, that fourth-down decision isn’t going to change.”

Meanwhile, some fans are taking a more Zen approach this season. “I’m just here for the commercials and the snacks,” admitted Julie, a Packers fan who has perfected the art of pretending not to care too much, despite the fact that her heart rate spikes every time the Packers are on third and long.

At publishing time, doctors are bracing for a surge in throat-related visits, as millions of fans will discover that yelling at their TV screens all season isn’t covered by their insurance.
