Netflix Retains Recommendation Algorithm as Essential Personnel
After cutting about 1,000 jobs, Netflix's algorithm kept ranking shows for people whose badges had already blinked red.

Los Gatos, Calif. — Netflix’s recommendation algorithm was retained as essential personnel Wednesday after the company said it would cut roughly 1,000 jobs — about 6 percent of its workforce — mostly in product, technology, legal and human resources.
“HR got the calendar invite at 9:12,” said Marisol Scrollstop, 34, a product manager whose badge still worked long enough to screenshot her farewell row. “By 9:41 the invite was canceled because the people who send invites were on the list. The algorithm pushed: ‘Because you watched organizational change.’”
Co-CEOs Ted Sarandos and Greg Peters told staff the mission — “to entertain the world” — requires discipline about where the company prioritizes people and resources, while calling the business strong, growing and on track for its full-year forecast. Sarandos said last month Netflix was “not growing as fast as I want.”
The algorithm, which has no desk and no severance math, kept ranking titles for people walking out with cardboard boxes. “Top 10 in Your Area” briefly listed Getting Laid Off, Quiet Quitting: The Reunion, and a documentary about a stapler that outlasted three reorganizations.
“We asked it to deprioritize workplace trauma,” said cafeteria lead Dewey Trayline, 49. “It boosted the trauma 14 percent and labeled it ‘Because You Skipped Intro.’”
Viewing time has stagnated; recent subscriber growth has leaned on a password crackdown and a cheaper ad tier while YouTube and a Paramount–Warner Bros. Discovery streaming mash-up loom. Earnings are due Oct. 20. Legal and HR cuts mean the memo explaining the cuts may be the last memo they co-author.
As of this report, Scrollstop’s home screen still offered “Continue Watching: Your Career,” paused at 94 percent with Skip Intro grayed out.
