Judge Blocks White House Press Ban; Outlets Reinstated as Unwanted Guests

A judge put CNN, Politico and MS NOW back in the White House, so the press office offered CNN a seat in the gift shop, on mute.

A federal judge on Tuesday blocked the White House from banning reporters from CNN, Politico and MS NOW, forcing the administration to readmit the three outlets to the complex as what one staffer called “legally mandated unwanted guests.”

U.S. District Judge Timothy Kelly granted a preliminary injunction restoring the reporters’ hard passes while their lawsuit proceeds, finding the ban likely violated the First and Fifth Amendments. The ruling does not require the president to let them into the Oval Office or onto Air Force One, which staff immediately described as “the good rooms.”

Within an hour, the press office had printed new visitor badges reading “PERMITTED (UNFORTUNATELY)” and moved the three outlets’ seats to a row labeled “Overflow / Hallway / Technically Inside.”

“We respect the court completely,” said deputy assistant press liaison Brantley Hollowell-Spruce, 31. “We’re simply exploring what respect looks like from the farthest possible chair.”

By evening the press office had floated a compromise: CNN could watch briefings on mute from the gift shop, between the commemorative coins and a rack of decorative Christmas ornaments. Politico would get the vending alcove. MS NOW was offered “a strong Wi-Fi signal near the parking gate.”

Lawyers for the outlets declined the proposal, noting that the gift shop closes at 4 p.m. and does not have chairs.

Hours after this story was filed, staffers were overheard asking the White House Counsel’s Office whether the First Amendment has a free trial they could cancel.
