Hotel Guest Who Hung ‘Do Not Disturb’ Sign in 2011 Recognized as Sovereign Nation
Housekeeping has knocked for 15 years. Room 412 now has a flag, a currency and an ambassador.

BRANSON, MO — A guest at the Ozark Vista Inn & Suites who hung a “Do Not Disturb” sign on Room 412 in March 2011 and never took it down has been formally recognized as a sovereign nation, hotel management confirmed Thursday.
The guest, Marlon Tebbetts, 63, a former carpet salesman, checked in for a two-night fishing trip and has not opened the door since. Housekeeping has knocked an estimated 22,000 times. “At some point a boundary becomes a border,” Tebbetts said through the door.
The Republic of 412 now flies its own flag, taped to the doorframe with a toothpick, and issues a currency based on the mini-shampoo. One conditioner is worth three shampoos. A body lotion is considered a reserve asset.
Front desk manager Priya Wendeltop, 41, said the hotel now handles all requests from the room through official channels. “If 412 wants towels, we send a diplomat,” she said. “Last month they asked for extra pillows, and we had to give up the ice machine on the fourth floor.”
A strip of yellow tape across the hallway carpet marks the frontier. Room service trays are left exactly one inch inside it under a 2019 treaty.
“We have mutual recognition with Room 409, who’s been on the phone with customer service since 2016,” said Tebbetts, who now refers to himself as the head of state and the minibar.
Officials later confirmed that the guest’s total bill has passed $412,000, and that Tebbetts has responded by declaring it foreign debt.
