FEC Clerk Adds ‘Quietly’ Checkbox After Musk’s $276 Million

An FEC filings clerk invents a new checkbox after logging more than $276 million in midterm gifts that Musk's representatives said arrived quietly.

A Federal Election Commission filings clerk said Tuesday she had to invent a new checkbox after logging more than $276 million in midterm donations that representatives for Elon Musk, the world’s only trillionaire, described as arriving quietly.

“Quietly is doing a lot of work for a number with nine digits,” said Tina Totalsheet, 39, who processes third-quarter reports ahead of Thursday’s FEC deadline. “The form had a box for ‘itemized.’ It did not have a box for ‘please pretend you didn’t notice the industrial printer.’”

According to figures confirmed by Lindsey Curnutte, a spokesperson for Musk’s America PAC, Musk has poured more than $276 million into Republican groups since July, making him the biggest known donor of the 2026 midterms. The largest share — $158 million — went to the Senate Leadership Fund. America PAC received more than $76 million. Additional gifts included $20 million to the Congressional Leadership Fund, $10 million to Lone Star Liberty PAC, $10 million to the Republican Governors Association and $2 million to the Republican Attorneys General Association. Known federal giving this cycle now sits near $366 million, above roughly $290 million in 2024.

Totalsheet said the office receipt printer, nicknamed Dot by interns, printed the Senate Leadership Fund line, paused for a respectful mechanical sigh, then asked for a second paper roll.

“I told Dot we don’t negotiate with hardware,” said Avery Receiptroll, 26, a PAC-facing intern who restocks toner. “Dot printed ‘QUIETLY’ in all caps anyway.”

Musk said in May 2025 he planned to do “a lot less” political spending in the future. Totalsheet declined to reconcile the quote with the new totals, except to note that her calculator now requires two hands.

Reached for comment late Tuesday, Dot jammed on “trillionaire” and displayed a status light Totalsheet translated as “still quietly.”
